Malala Becomes Youngest, 16th Female Nobel Prize Winner

Pakistani child education activist Malala Yousafzai and Indian child rights campaigner, Kailash Satyarthi, have jointly won the Nobel Peace Prize. The duo is the 95th Nobel Peace Prize winners and Malala’s win takes the number of women on the list to 16 out of 95.
Satyarthi and Yousafzai were picked for their struggle against the suppression of children and young people, and for the right of all children to education, the Norwegian Nobel Committee said in its citation.
At the age of just 17, Malala is the youngest ever recipient of the prize, eclipsing Australian-born British scientist, Lawrence Bragg, who was 25 when he shared the Physics Prize with his father in 1915.
Malala who was in Nigeria a few months ago to join advocacy for the release of the over 200 school girls abducted from their school in Chibok, Borno State, was tipped to win last year’s Nobel Peace Prize.
The two South Asian activists beat other notable personalities including Pope Francis and American whistleblower Edward Snowden who were the favourites this year to win the coveted honour. The winners this year were selected from a list of 278 nominees, the highest number of candidates ever. The list included 47 organisations, the Nobel committee said. The previous record was 259 in 2013.
This year’s prize is likely to be seen as an uncontroversial choice from a Norwegian Nobel committee which has not shied away from controversy in recent years, says the BBC’s Lars Bevanger in Oslo. Norway’s relations with China are still suffering after a Chinese dissident won the peace prize in 2010, he said.
The Nobel Peace prize, worth about $1.1 million (approximately N176 million), will be presented in Oslo on December 10, the anniversary of the death of Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel, who founded the famous award in his 1895 will.

what you need to know about HIV/AIDS

Condoms are the only form of protection which can both help to stop the transmission of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as HIV and prevent pregnancy. It is important that a new condom be used correctly each and every time you have sex. A number of different types of condoms are now available. Also, only latex and polyurethane condoms effectively prevent the spread of HIV, not those made of natural animal membranes, what if it breaks?
Abstinence is the best answer.

I’ll never invite Ike Uche as long as I’m in charge – Keshi

Super Eagles Head Coach Stephen Keshi yesterday warned that he will not be interested in talking about out-of-favour striker, Ikechukwu Uche who is yet to play for the national team since after the 2013 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) win.
A visibly angry Keshi said that he will never beg any player to play for the country because during his time he was never begged by any coach to play for the national team.
The former national team captain who was explaining why he chose to invite young and inexperienced players while ignoring established players like
“This will be the last time I will speak about Ike Uche and I will not speak about him again, we are not quarreling. Before the match against Congo, i gave them the list because I never thought I will come back to handle the team. I told them I will not do the list because I am not your coach they say no, so I did the list.Uche and Obafemi Martins,  Keshi said hence forth he  would not entertain any question about  Uche again.
“Ike Uche’s name was in the 24-man list. He didn’t even know about it, I did not tell him. Uche called me four days later and I was like ah, we spoke and that was it.
The next time I told the team secretary to ask the players if they had South African visa and if they don’t have it so that they can get the visa. When Uche was asked, he said why are you asking me, what do you need my passport for? I hate to speak without Uche not being here. You can call him and put it on speaker, if I’m telling lies let him say it.
“Please nobody should ask me about Uche again; Uche said he wants somebody to explain to him why they said he was a bad kid, and if not he is not playing. I said ok take his name out. I am not going to beg Uche, I’m not going to ask Daniel to beg Uche. We all played for this country for twenty something years and nobody begged us to play. We were begging to play. So let it be the end today, don’t ask me about Uche. Why not encourage the kids who have come here to play for their country. Why must it be Ike Uche, is it only him, Obafemi  is not saying anything, we have hundreds of other players who are not here,” Keshi warned.
He also admonished the media to support the young players who are eager to play for the country instead of always talking of Uche.
“I don’t know when we will be appreciated, we win, they say we didn’t play well, we lose they say ah, kill them and we draw, they say they are bad players. We really don’t know where we stand, when will  we be appreciated?”.
Many analysts have been calling for the recall of Uche after the poor start of the Super Eagles to the 2015 Morocco AFCON qualifiers.

Man, 41, rapes 9-yr-old in Jigawa

Dutse—The operatives of Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, NSCDC, have arrested one Zakari Imam, 41, for allegedly defiling a nine-year-old girl (names withheld) at Hadejia City of Jigawa State.
The state commandant of NSCDC, Dr. Muhmmad Gidado, told newsmen in Dutse, yesterday, that the culprit ran away to neighbouring Niger Republic after committing the crime, abandoning his motorcycle.
He said his officers followed due process to effect his arrest in his hideout in Niger Republic.
The Jigawa NSCDC boss said investigation into the case was ongoing, adding that on completion, the suspect would be arraigned in court.
He vowed to bring to book anybody found committing rape in the state, describing it as a barbaric and animalistic behaviour.
He also warned those with the intention of committing rape to have a re- think, saying there was no hiding place for them in Jigawa State.

Jonathan fumes over publication he’s worth $100million; threatens legal action

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan threatened legal action Wednesday after he was listed as the sixth richest head of state in Africa, calling the report baseless and an attempt to incite Nigerians against him.
The United States-based publication, Richest Lifestyle, ranked Mr. Jonathan alongside King Mswati III of Swaziland, both men reportedly worth $100 million (about N16.5 billion).
The richest African president, the magazine said, is Angola’s Jose Eduardo dos Santos, with a net worth of $20 billion.
The Nigerian presidency condemned the publication, and described it as another attempt to unjustifiably portray Mr. Jonathan as a corrupt leader.
A statement by a presidential spokesperson, Reuben Abati, said there was no factual basis to the report.
The presidency demanded a retraction of the “libellous” publication and an apology, vowing to institute a legal action within and outside Nigeria.
“We have noted with consternation the listing of President  Goodluck Jonathan by a website – – as the sixth richest African President with an estimated net worth of $100 Million U.S. Dollars.
“The Presidency condemns the totally unwarranted inclusion of President Jonathan in the publication titled “Africa’s Richest Presidents 2014” as another attempt to unjustifiably portray the President as a corrupt leader and incite public disaffection against him.
“We therefore demand a retraction and an unreserved apology from Richest and all those who have reproduced the offensive article.
“Otherwise, they should be prepared to substantiate their libelous claims against the president in courts of law within and outside Nigeria,” Mr. Abati said in the statement.
Since coming to office, Mr. Jonathan has maintained a firm lid on his wealth status, and has repeatedly made it clear inquisitions or speculations about his worth would not be entertained.
The president, till date, has not publicly declared his asset.
When asked during an interview in 2012 why he has refused to disclose his assets to encourage transparency, Mr. Jonathan famously retorted: “I don’t give a damn”.
As vice president, Mr. Jonathan managed to declare his asset, apparently prodded by then President Umar Yar’adua.
In the assets he made public at the time, the then Vice President Jonathan said he had not bought any car of his own even after serving as deputy governor, governor and vice president.
The only car Mr. Jonathan admitted to owning, was a gift.
The vice president also listed other properties, including a boat.
Richest Lifestyle did not state how it arrived at its figure of $100 million.
For President Jonathan, the paper merely stated that “Goodluck Jonathan is the President of Nigeria. His net worth is estimated to be around $100 million. He launched a ‘Roadmap for Power Sector Reform’, launched the Youth Enterprise with Innovation in Nigeria and launched the Transformation Agenda. He is a member of the ruling ‘People Democratic Party’.
The presidency said the report was flawed and without basis.
“We categorically assert that there is no factual basis for ranking President Jonathan as the sixth richest African Head of State with a net worth of about $100 Million U.S. Dollars.
“As is well known, President Jonathan has never been a businessman or entrepreneur, but a life-long public servant.
“The President has held public office since 1999 and has regularly declared his assets as required by Nigerian laws.
“He has had no personal income since 1999 other than his official remuneration as deputy governor, governor, vice president, acting president and president which are matters of public record.
“There has been no significant variation in the totality of his personal assets as contained in his last declaration to the Nigerian Code of Conduct Bureau in 2011 which, as can be verified, was a very, very far cry from the $100 million figure now being bandied about by Richest and other irresponsible, copy-cat publications.
“The clear and unacceptable imputation of the claim that President Jonathan is now worth about $100 Million is that the President has corruptly enriched himself while in office which is certainly not the case,” it said.

APC says Asari-Dokubo took part in $9.3m arms scandal

The All Progressives Congress says ex-militant, Alhaji Mujaheed Dokubo-Asari, was involved in the $9.3m arms deal which led to the arrest of two Nigerians and an Israeli in South Africa.
The party, therefore, asked President Goodluck Jonathan to explain to Nigerians what Dokubo-Asari was doing on the plane where the money was found and confiscated by the South African authorities.
But Dokubo-Asari had distanced himself from the $9.3m botched arms deal.
Dokubo-Asari is presently performing the 2014 Hajj in Saudi Arabia.
Here what he said....

"The last time he visited South Africa was in 2002 and could not have gone to any country without a visa.
He said, “Can you enter any country without a visa? No person can enter any country without a visa. Presently, I am in Saudi Arabia performing my Hajj as the Amirul Hajj of Bayelsa State and this can be confirmed. I flew Flynass from Kaduna on September 27. So, it is really a shame that Lai Mohammed who has defiled the name of Allah has become a pathological and award-winning liar.
“Nobody enters any country without a visa and I have not been to South Africa since 2002. I flew Arik airline from Lagos on the September 27 and went to Kaduna where I flew Flynass airline and came to Saudi Arabia.”
